How the lessons are structured -
"Written":

You must login before you can access this page

We will learn more about the 'Classroom' page later (See 'Your Classroom'). Please click on the 'Lesson tab' (in the top right-hand corner of the screen).

Clicking on the 'Lesson' tab will bring you to the page below. As you can see on the left, you can find lessons to suit your needs, but we will get to that later (See 'Lesson Search Engine'). On the right is a list of all the different types of lessons available: Comprehension, Creative Clinic, General Clinic, Written, and Listening (and the grammar newsletters and pronunciation guides). By the right of each title is the number of lessons of that type that are available in the archive. Let's click on "Written"...

When you click on a lesson title (e.g. "Written") you will be taken to the 'master page' for that type of lesson. Below is the 'Written master page'. This contains a list of all the "Written" lessons in the archive, in date order (the most recent first). On the left is the lesson ID number (meaning 'identification' number). Every lesson in the archive has a unique number so that you can find it easily (See 'Lesson Search Engine'). In the next column are all the titles of all the lessons. By searching the newsletters for that week you will find more information about what is in the lesson. In the next column is the date that the lesson was posted on the website by an administrator. The next column tells you the lesson type (in this case "Written") and the last column tells you how much it will cost to buy in Credits. If the lesson is posted during your time as a member, it will be free. You need to click on the title of the lesson to continue to the next page.

"Written" lessons focus the students' attention on material that administrators feel would be beneficial, topical and interesting. They try to find a variety of subjects. The task might be to re-write certain paragraphs or to write a short essay on an article or topic. The success of the lesson therefore, will depend on student participation. Students can send in their work and administrators will review it. The administrator will decide what to put on the website to give the most learning opportunities. The administrators will discuss problems and give corrections and will also offer alternative ways of expressing what the students wrote. If there is a sentence you don't understand or something you would like to learn in the lesson, you can submit it to Learn Articulate English. It's another really good opportunity to test yourself and grow as a student. Be free and express yourself as you want.

Click on the lesson title to enter the lesson

To the right is the 'lesson purchase page'. You will only see this if you are trying to access a lesson that wasn't posted during your time as a member of Learn Articulate English. To buy the lesson you need to click on "Purchase" at the bottom-right of the page.

When you click on "Purchase" you will be taken to the 'purchase confirmation page'.

Click on "Purchase Lesson" to confirm you want to buy the lesson.

If it's all gone right you will be shown this confirmation message for a few seconds before the lesson appears.

You will now be taken to the lesson itself. In the lesson on the right, students were asked to click on the link provided and re-write some of the paragraphs within the article. The administrator would then correct their work and also post some other alternatives.

To submit a piece of work you need to click on "Create a Response".

When you have clicked on "Create a Response" you will be taken to the 'Written response screen' (on the left).

If you want you could write your work in the box, but we recommend using a word processor so that you can save your work and then 'copy and paste' it into the 'written response' box.

The example of text on the left was written by a student called Michael.

Click on "Submit Response" to send it to the administrator.

When you have done that you should get the following message for a few seconds, then you will be taken back to the lesson.

When the administrator has reviewed your work and corrected it, you can go back to the lesson page and look at it. As you can see, Michael's work has been posted along with the date and time.

Click on his name to see what he has written, whether an administrator has written anything yet, and to ask questions/suggest alternatives.

As you can see on the right, the administrator hasn't written anything yet, but you can ask questions or try and rephrase it by writing in the "Your Response" box.

Click on "Submit Response" to send it to the administrator.

On the left you can see that Michael decided to add a further response to his own work. You will get the "Response Submitted" message to tell you it's worked properly when you have clicked on "Submit Response".

As long as the lesson is "active" you can keep asking questions about the lesson or a student's work.
